About
Torrent invites the audience to participate in the mapping of a projected slideshow of digital images to paper through continuous line drawing. This work was shown at 13.0.0.0.0, a live drawing event at Paper Plane Gallery, March 2012. This exhibition asked artists to respond to the theme of the Mayan Apocalypse. I chose to trace images of recent devastations, including floods in Queensland and the Japanese tsunami. The aspect of distance to an image was evoked literally and figuratively by the contrasting responses to the work from participants and spectators. Whilst participants generally enjoyed and were thrown in the task, spectators could grasp the gravity of the images of destruction. I was interested in the engaging the tension between the overwhelming abundance of information media and the need to pay attention.
